Well, our baby is officially due on 8/6/09. I am 7 weeks this week. It's all definitely started to be more real over the last two weeks, for several reasons.
First, we told Tim's dad and step-mom that we're pregnant. So much for waiting until Christmas. Honestly, I had no idea how we were going to get through an entire weekend at their house without them suspecting anything. Apparently me insisting on drinking milk with dinner rather than wine really tipped them off. Anyway, they were really excited and it felt great to finally tell people.
What did not feel great, though, was the nausea that also set in that weekend. I felt sick almost the whole time, and the plane ride home was miserable. It's been a bit better this week, but not great. Every time I open the refrigerator and look at the food my stomach just turns. When I get up in the morning I have to eat right away or else I have to be really careful not to think about food. Ugh. I'm also hungry ALL of the time. And being hungry makes me nauseous. But if I eat too much at once I also get nauseous. So I'm constantly either hungry or nauseous. And when I'm hungry nothing sounds good at all. (Except for the Arby's roast beef sandwich I was totally craving the other day at work at 10:30am and gave into :-) It's like a cruel game I can't win. And to top it off, a lot of the things that I usually really enjoy just don't taste good anymore. Like coffee. That's my favorite thing about the morning - my cup of coffee. Now it just makes me feel sick and I don't even want to drink it. So disappointing!
The other thing that has made this whole thing less surreal is that I went to see the OB Nurse this week and got my official due date, etc. It really wasn't overly noteworthy other than that, though. I had blood drawn for tests and had to pee in a cup. Fun fun. I absolutely HATE having blood drawn. I have serious issues with it. The first time I ever had it done was a few years ago and I actually threw up AND passed out. That's got to be like a record or something. Anyway, I've gotten better at it and was OK during this time, but afterwards I saw what looked like my entire supply of blood in vials on a table next to me and did not feel so hot. That's what bothers me the most about this whole having a baby thing. Giving birth, etc. does not really concern me (although my tune may change as the event grows nearer). What bothers me is all of the blood drawing and IV's. It just freaks me out. Going to my first doctor's visit one week after New Year's. Dad may do an ultrasound sometime this week, though, which will be fun.
Finally, the other fun news of the week is that I finally got to tell my parents and sibs that I'm pregnant. Since we told some of Tim's family then I was finally 'allowed' to tell mine at my dad's birthday celebration the other night. Everyone seems very excited and it's fun to finally have some people other than Tim to share my excitement with.
I spent tonight looking at crib bedding. Thinking about the challenge of a unisex nursery already...

Hooray! Third Time's the Charm
So we found out a week ago today that I am pregnant. It took three months which, in the grand scheme of things is not a long time, but which felt like an eternity to me, being that I am quite possibly the most impatient person in the world.
According to my VERY ROUGH calculations, I am about 6 weeks along and the baby will probably be here in early August. I really have no idea, though, seeing as how I do not go to the doctor until next week and, even then, I only get to see a nurse. WTF? I mean, that's got to be the sickest joke in the world. You find out what is one of the most exciting pieces of news in your life and you can't tell anyone and you can't even go to the doctor!
It's all very surreal at this point. I don't feel pregnant at all. You know all of those symptoms they talk about? None so far. Nausea? Not really (except for the occasional slight stomach upset when I let myself get too hungry). Fatigue? Nope. Breast tenderness? Nada. Nothing. If it wasn't for the two little plus signs I wouldn't believe it. I guess that's a good thing, but it's making the whole thing feel fake.
We've decided not to tell anyone until Christmas. I wanted to tell my parents sooner, but Tim wants to tell as many of his family in person as possible so we're waiting until Christmas so that we can tell his mom and brother when we visit them in England. And we don't want to tell one side of the family before another so everyone's just going to have to wait until Christmas. It's really hard not to say anything, though, because we just found out that Tim's brother's wife is pregnant too. They found out the day before we did and have already told everyone. Crazy, isn't it? Assuming everyone has a healthy pregnancy the cousins will end up being due right around the same time. I think it's good that we're holding off for a few weeks, though, so we're not totally 'stealing their thunder'.
I'm worried that even Christmas is a little early, though, as I'll only be about 9 weeks along (I think). I'm really torn on this when to tell everyone thing. I'm so excited that I want to tell everyone now. Like immediately. Like every time I am talking to someone I have a little voice in my head saying, "Come on, Liz, just go ahead and tell them. It's OK. They're going to find out at some point anyway..." And I feel like I've been in an abnormally large amount of conversations this past week that involve someone asking me when we're going to start a family. And I have to make up some BS answer like, "Hopefully soon." This does not make the little voice happy. Anyway, everyone's so uppity about waiting until after the 12 week mark that I'm hesitant to say anything to anyone, even our families. I always thought that having a miscarriage would not be that big of a deal, especially if it's early on, because you can always get pregnant again, blah, blah, blah. Now that I'm here, though, I know I will be so totally disappointed if I do because I'm already SO excited about this baby. Like this morning I was thinking about how old it will be at Halloween next year and how fun it will be to dress it up (I'm leaning towards pea pod, but Tim hates that idea for some reason. I suspect he hates it just to irritate me, though.) Anyway, it's definitely going to make the whole situation a lot harder if something does happen if we have to make a lot of phone calls to update people. Hence the age-old wisdom to getting past week 12...
I just hope everything turns out OK.
Meanwhile, I will just have to be patient. And if I'm already this ancy at week 1... or 6... or whatever week it is in this totally counter intuitive baby-growing schedule, it's going to be really interesting getting through the next 34...
