Teeth... Again

Ok, now this is just getting ridiculous. Three weeks ago the child had one tooth. Just one tiny little tooth. That's all he had for almost 3 months. Fast forward to today and he now has (in varying degrees of coming in) 5 of the things. It's craziness! He got 2 on the bottom really quickly in succession and then yesterday my mom watched him all day so Tim and I could go to an infant/child CPR class (that was a barrel of laughs, let me tell you) and she noticed that one of his top teeth was coming in. Oddly enough, it's not one of the two middle ones. It's the one to the left (his right) of the where the middle two should be. Then today when I was checking that one's progress I noticed that the middle one next to it has popped through. It's like someone flipped a switch and now all of his tooth are coming in. I joked with my mom that we're going to come back from Europe and the kid's going to have a full mouth of teeth.

He hasn't been unbearable or anything, but he's definitely had a short fuse the past few weeks and I'm sure it's due to these teeth. I'm crossing my fingers that maybe the tooth onslaught takes a pause in the next few days so he'll feel better and be less irritable while we're traveling.

On Being a (Very Part-Time) Working Mom...

Well, I've been back to work for about a month now and it's going fairly well. I do have some anxiety on the nights before I work about leaving Will and it does make life a bit more hectic on the other days of the week because I have less time to fit housework, errands, working out, etc. in, but overall I have enjoyed it. It sounds cliche but I do feel like my life is more fulfilling. I'm being challenged more and getting some "me" time to be my own person outside of being a mom. I was worried that it was going to be really hard to be away from him, but I do have to say that while I'm there it's very easy to focus on work and not think about being a mom. Almost too easy, perhaps... Our babysitter Elizabeth makes me very comfortable about the whole thing also. She's absolutely great with Will and I know that I don't have to worry about him at all while I'm gone. And then when I get home it makes my time with him all the more precious and it feels like less of a chore. It's almost like I can feel like I've gotten my "productivity" in for the day so I'm free to focus on him instead of having a bunch of nervous energy and constantly feeling like I should be doing something to keep myself busy. The money's nice too :-)

I'm crossing my fingers that the sitter's fall schedule works out so that I can continue with this schedule. I definitely like the 2 mornings a week better than I think I would a full day. Even though it means having to go through the motions of getting to and from the office twice instead of once (and paying to park, etc) it breaks up the week better and it means that I still get to spend half of the day with him. If I was working a full day I probably wouldn't get home until almost 6:00 which would give me hardly any time with him before bed. Just doesn't sound appealing.

As with anything there have been some bumps and adjustments, mostly work related. Since I left, my group has moved downtown which means that instead of parking in a free, attached-to-the-building garage I have to park several blocks away in a $4.50 per day garage and waste a lot of time walking to and from my car (which is going to get even less fun as the summer wears on). The company pays for all of the full time employees' parking either in the building or in a nearby garage, but I miss out on that perk since I'm only part time. In addition, being back has been weird because there are so many new people. The group has almost doubled since I left, several of the people that were there before aren't anymore, and my boss has hired someone to replace me in my old job (obviously). Plus, there have been two acquisitions and some major corporate reorganization since I left that have really changed the balance sheet, reporting, etc. So it's just an odd mix between being back at my old job and being at a completely new job (new people, new place, new org structure, etc). There's also been some politics I've had to deal with that have made me uncomfortable, and I've kind of been butting heads with the guy that replaced me. I'm not sure if he feels threatened that I'm back or something but he seems very keen on asserting his position for no apparent reason. Welcome back to the corporate world, Liz!

I think the hardest part about being back, though, has been that I now have to face what I walked away from two days a week. I mean, I freely chose and am very happy with my choice to stay home. This is how I always planned it to be and I wouldn't want it any other way. I walked away from a lot, though, in terms of money, seniority, career path, position, respect from coworkers... it goes on and on. Not to be cocky, but I was good at what I did and I worked my ass off to get where I was. And then I walked away from it. So now the company email system lists me as a "Special Projects Analyst" instead of a "Vice President". And I have to do all of my own "bitch-work" because I don't have a team working for me. And I get to watch as my replacement and the other people who would have been my peers sit in what would have been my office (while I sit in a borrowed cube), park in what would have been my highly-coveted parking spot in the building, and buy new big houses with what would have been my big salary. Do I regret it? Definitely not. Does it sting a little? I'd be lying if I said it didn't.

Tooth-orama!

And suddenly the crazy little man has 3 whole teeth! He went with just one for over 2months and then all of the sudden he got 2 more practically at the same time. First, the other bottom middle one came through and then before it was even all the way in the one next to it came through. So now he looks really funny because he's got 3 little teeth in descending order. The 2nd one was a non-issue (at least as compared to the fussiness we had with the 1st one a few months ago) but he got pretty irritable and didn't sleep well when he was working on the 3rd. All seems to be back to normal now. At least for the next week until we completely SCREW up his schedule by putting him on an overnight flight and jet-lagging him by 5 hours. This should be very interesting.

He's crawling really well now and zooming around the house. He's also started to be able to walk behind this little lion on wheels push toy that Aunt Rachel and Uncle Andy got him for Christmas. He's actually progressed on that quite a bit in the last few days and has started cruising along the furniture really well and pulling himself up on everything. Who knows how long he'll cruise around, but at the rate he's moving I'm thinking there may be a real chance that he'll start walking in Europe. We'll see...

I somehow got signed up for emails from baby websites that I get periodically. Today I got one that notified me that Will is now 6 weeks away from being 1. That's just so crazy I don't even want to think about it.

Playtime!

Here's a video of Will crawling around and playing with Daddy. You can also hear the crazy excited panting in this clip :-)

This Week in Will World

First off, Mr. Will has finally gotten his 2nd tooth. It's just now popped through the gum so it's still hard to see, but I'm sure in the next week or two he will be sporting two very visible bottom teeth.

Also this week Will has started making raspberry sounds. Like constnatly. He just wanders around the house and plays with his toys all the while spewing spit everywhere. It's pretty funny actually. Tonight I put him down for bed and heard him through the monitor up there doing it.

We've also noticed over the last few weeks that he uses his pointer finger to feel everything. Anytime he's around a new surface (someone's clothes, a piece of furniture, the floor) he sticks his little finger out and rubs it back and forth so he can feel the texture. We won't hazard a guess as to where he got that from... I do have to admit, though, that I have an odd habit (or should I say compluslive need) of tapping my fingernail against things to determine if they're made of glass or plastic. Ah, the Kirkwood OCD lives on!
